It is past time that we legalize recreational marijuana at the federal level. The continued criminalization of marijuana is based on nothing but outdated social norms, and the benefits to be seen from legalization are massive. This isn’t just an issue of personal freedom; with proper regulation and taxation, the revenue that could be generated can turn into an investment in our communities and our people.
Prohibition Has Failed
We have spent decades punishing citizens for the possession and use of marijuana. During this time, ordinary people, particularly those in the working class, have carried the brunt of the consequences. Arrests, permanent records, lost opportunities, and broken trust. All of this stems from policies that have failed to achieve their stated goals. It is time to admit that keeping marijuana illegal is not consistent with the values we hold dearly.
Legalization Helps the Economy
States with legal cannabis have already generated billions in tax revenue. This industry supports hundreds of thousands of jobs through cultivation, processing, retail, testing, and construction. These legal markets create genuine opportunities for small businesses and farmers.
The resulting revenue can support:
- Public schools and infrastructure
- Rural development
- Substance use treatment
- Veteran services
- Local government budgets
In rural America, including places like Tennessee, this could mean new agricultural opportunities and economic activity where it is needed most. That could be an unforeseen difference maker for countless citizens.

Legalization Helps Veterans
For many veterans, this issue is personal. Many of our heroes live with chronic pain, PTSD, insomnia, and anxiety resulting from their service. They are often looking for alternatives to opioids or sedatives. Some report that cannabis helps them manage symptoms and function better day to day. While more rigorous research is certainly needed, veteran reports have documented these experiences clearly.
This is not an argument for wishful thinking. It is an argument for freedom, research, and access. Veterans deserve options and honesty. Most importantly, they deserve not to be treated like criminals for seeking relief. I support measures like H.R. 966, the Veterans Cannabis Use for Safe Healing Act, which protects veterans in legal medical cannabis states. But we can’t stop there.
Tax It. Regulate It. Do It Right.
Legalization should not mean chaos. Instead, it should mean smart, common sense regulation. This includes:
- Strict age restrictions and product testing.
- Clear labeling requirements and impaired driving enforcement.
- Consumer protections and tax structures that fund public needs.
- Support for small growers rather than just large corporations.
We already know how to regulate complex markets. We can do it here too.
This Is About Justice
Legalization must include the expungement of records nationwide for nonviolent marijuana convictions. It would make no sense for corporations to profit from an industry while people still carry criminal records for conduct that is now legal. That is not justice.
This Is a Freedom Issue
This issue pertains to a timeless American value: that the government should not interfere with responsible, harmless choices made by consenting adults. It should not stand between veterans and their treatment options, nor should it maintain a failed policy simply because change makes some people uncomfortable, or because we refuse to admit that the mindset that made marijuana illegal in the first place was simply incorrect.
Legalize it. Tax it. Regulate it. We should use the revenue to help communities, support farmers, and protect small businesses. It is time to end this policy that has done far more harm than good.
